Pioneering Carbon Capture Technology to Reduce Emissions
Aramco, a global leader in energy and chemicals, has partnered with Carbon Clean and SAMSUNG E&A to demonstrate cutting-edge carbon capture technology. This collaboration aims to showcase a groundbreaking solution to capture CO2 emissions, further advancing sustainable practices in the energy sector.
State-of-the-Art Carbon Capture Plant with CycloneCC Technology
SAMSUNG E&A will manage the engineering, procurement, and construction of the carbon capture plant, which will be installed on the sales gas compressor turbine exhaust gas stack. The plant will test Carbon Clean’s innovative CycloneCC technology, capable of capturing CO2 from exhaust streams with low CO2 concentrations of approximately 4%.
The modular CycloneCC system boasts a 50% smaller footprint compared to conventional carbon capture solutions. If successful, this technology could reduce the total installation cost of carbon capture systems by up to 50%, while maintaining superior performance and efficiency.
Collaboration to Drive Innovation and Sustainability
Ali A. Al-Meshari, Senior Vice President of Technology Oversight & Coordination at Aramco, expressed his optimism:
“I am excited about this collaboration with Carbon Clean and Samsung to demonstrate this promising new technology in one of our facilities. If successful, this demonstration will pave the way for the wider deployment of this technology with partners in the Kingdom and beyond.”
Aniruddha Sharma, Chair and CEO of Carbon Clean, highlighted the significance of this partnership:
“Aramco and Samsung Ventures are investors in Carbon Clean, so we’re proud to deepen our relationship through this partnership. This first-of-a-kind deployment capturing very low concentrations of CO2 is a key milestone in scaling up and commercializing CycloneCC. Its compact, modular design should be easily integrated with gas turbines, delivering high-performance carbon capture in an industrial setting where space is typically limited.”
Cheon Hong Park, Executive Vice President and Head of Sustainable Solutions Division at SAMSUNG E&A, added:
“We are excited to collaborate with Aramco and Carbon Clean to support their carbon-reduction goals. This project aligns with our mission to deliver innovative solutions that help industries reduce their environmental impact. With the successful execution of the demonstration, I hope that SAMSUNG E&A contributes to Aramco’s carbon reduction ambition, including future scale-up.”
Compact, Efficient, and Advanced Technology
CycloneCC achieves its exceptional performance by integrating rotating packed beds (RPBs) with Carbon Clean’s proprietary APBS-CDRMax solvent. This combination ensures efficient CO2 capture even at low concentrations, making it a transformative solution for industrial carbon capture.
A Step Towards a Sustainable Future
This collaboration underscores Aramco’s commitment to advancing sustainable technologies and reducing carbon emissions. If successful, this demonstration will mark a significant step forward in deploying scalable, cost-effective carbon capture solutions globally.
